Classical RENAISSANCE  TECHNIQUE

   Many well-known artists of the Renaissance such as Titian, Caravaggio, Jan van Eyck, and Pieter Breugel created a preliminary monochrome underpainting in shades of grey known as a grisaille, over which they painted transparent layers of color.  By this technique, they were able to create a near-realistic portrayal of their subject.
